Fall Planting and Pacific Coast Irise

Fall Planting and Pacific Coast Irise

Fall Planting and Pacific Coast irises….some of our native plants have a very strong seasonal planting time window. If your plant within in the window they will grow just fine. Outside the seasonal window not so much. Pacific coast irises are like this. In California we have 11 or 12 native pacific coast irises depending on who is doing the classification. These all “cross” too making some really nice hybrids. In our region you can plant them now until the end of winter in a shady area. The closer to the coast the more sun the more inland they really need the shade. Not for our deserts. Once established they are very drought tolerant. Minimal summer water. They are small evergreen plants H 1′ +/- x W 2′ +/- with big bright flowers at 4″ across. The flower range in all colors and combinations. Will post lots of these later but this is one of our creations and you can add it and others to your garden now in 3Gallon pots. It’s called ‘RedGold.
