When Should I Plant Matilija Poppies? NOW!

Friends and family often ask which is the most popular plant that we grow? While we do grow a tremendous variety of interesting California native plants from sages, California lilacs, to pacific coast irises, the single most popular is the Matilija poppy and for good reason. These natives have very large (6″+) white flowers with golf ball size orange stamens in the middle.

Once established these are pretty vigorous growers and need some space. Long flowering from mid-March through July. They are excellent for feeding pollinators and are beautiful cut flowers to bring in to your house as well.

They have a reputation of being hard to “start” but if you plant them at the proper time of year they are fairly easy. The time to plant is now (fall) through about mid-spring and much after that they can be a bit of a challenge.

So plant them as soon as they are available and properly “rooted” and you’ll likely have flowers the first year too.

Yes, there are available now at our nursery…
