Milkweed plants dead? No, Just Sleeping

This is the time of year when native milkweed plants – food plants for the monarch and queen caterpillars- go dormant. That means they will pretty much dies back to the ground and is part of the normal cycle of things. They will come back/break dormancy in very early spring.

This too signals the end of the monarch breeding season and the monarchs should be overwintering on under tree branches near the coast between Santa Cruz, Ca to upper Baja.

What about planting new milkweed plants? Yes, this is the time to plant as long as they’re we’ll rooted, they’re ready to go and they’ll be pushing up in about mid-March waiting for the butterflies.
