Nursery News Best Time to Plant!

This is the best time of year to plant- late fall when the temps. cool down, the winds aren’t as strong, and you even get some rain. We are planting away at the nursery too. Everything can be planted this time of year with a high degree of success.

One of the more interesting things to plant for the shade garden are pacific coast irises. While this is the beginning of the best time to plant the availability isn’t so great for another few weeks, however we do have a limited number of them in 5-gallon pots for your garden.

Take a look at these:

‘Ocean Blue’- as close to a true blue as there is.

‘Canyon Snow’- probably the most widely used pacific coast iris hybrid.

claricerichards

‘Clarice Richards’ also a very hardy one hybridized by Dr. Richard Richards and grew these in the much warmer Riverside County.

We do have a few others in the 5-gallon containers- well worth the extra expense since you’ll have lots more flowers.

And, and, and we’ve added some Mimulus rutilus or red monkey flower to our Availability List. This is native to the Simi Valley area and is very unusual. Plant in partial shade or north facing spots in the garden and water every other week. In summer don’t water more than 1x per month(if even that).  These are really cool.
